Obituary: Ransom FISH died Thursday afternoon. One of the few veterans of Civil War succumbed to lingering illness. All members of his family at the bedside at the end. Surrounded by his family last Thursday afternoon at 5:45 o`clock, Ransom FISH lapsed into the last long sleep. His demise came as a welcome release from months of illness following a shock. Born in Independence township, he was in the 85th year of his life. He was son of Lewis B. and Fanny REMINGTON FISH.
At the age of 19 years he enlisted in the New York Dragoons on 13 Aug 1862, and served with the Northern army until honorable discharged on 19 July, 1865. He was in many battles.
He was united in marriage with Miss Abbie COLLINS on 25 Nov. 1866, and she, together with three daughters, Mrs. D. G. SPICER of this village, Mrs. Florence McGINTY of Hornell, and Mrs. Fred PATTERSON of Akron, Ol, and one son, W.D. FISH of Coudersport, PA, survive, as does one brother, Frank B. FISH of Stannards.
The funeral was held from the house at 2 o`clock Saturday afternoon, June 2nd and interment was made in Rural Cemeterry, Rev. R.S. Kellerman officiating. At the cemetery the body was borne to the grave by seven grandsons, (the sons of Mr. and Mrs. D.G. Spicer.)
Ranse, as he was familiarly known about town, was a carpenter of no mean ability, a man who took great pride in doing his work in workmanlike manner. He was a big, whole-souled man who had the respect of all who were privileged to know him. He was an active member of Sawyer Post, G.A.R., until it was disbanded and he made it a duty to (until this year) see that every soldier`s grave bore its flag for Decoration Day, but this year he ws just entering his last rest and others had to take up his work where he laid it down.
